Aaron & Nicole travelled from Florida on a trip to the UK, on a holiday visiting London, Scotland and also Bristol. They stayed a couple of days at the beautiful Thornbury Castle, on the Northern edge of Bristol.

During this trip, Aaron had planned on proposing and had hired me to photograph the proposal moment and then some couple's photos at the castle afterwards to celebrate their engagement. They had already discussed an engagement, so it wasn't a huge shock to Nicole when Aaron got down on one knee; nonetheless, their smiles and love are clearly shown through the images.

The castle garden and grounds feature so many incredible photo locations, and with the couple visiting from America, it was important to try to include some of these classic castle scenes that are so unique to the UK.

Top Tips for an Engagement Shoot at Thornbury Castle, Bristol

If you’re planning an engagement shoot that feels both romantic and timeless, Thornbury Castle near Bristol is a perfect choice. With its grand architecture, manicured gardens, and historic atmosphere, it’s one of those locations that instantly elevates your photos. To help you make the most of it, here are some simple tips to ensure your session feels relaxed and beautifully natural.

1. Choose the right time of day for light. The light around Thornbury Castle is magical early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The soft, golden tones add warmth and texture to the stone walls and gardens. Avoid midday when the sun is harsh and shadows are strong. Good light makes all the difference to your photos.

2. Explore the location in advance. Take a walk around before the shoot so you know which spots you love. The castle has endless photo opportunities, from ivy-covered walls and arched doorways to hidden courtyards and long walkways. Knowing a few favourites helps your photographer plan the flow of the session and make the most of the space.

3. Have a wet weather plan. British weather is unpredictable, but Thornbury Castle has you covered. The interior spaces are just as beautiful as the gardens. Think stone corridors, grand staircases, and dramatic windows. Even if it rains, you’ll still have incredible backdrops for your photos.

4. Dress for comfort and style. The castle grounds include gardens, gravel paths, and stone steps, so choose shoes you can move comfortably in. Opt for outfits that complement the castle’s tones and textures, such as soft neutrals or warm, earthy colours. Most importantly, wear something that feels like you.

5. Use the grounds creatively. Don’t rush through the shoot. Take time to wander and explore. The castle walls, iron gates, archways, and gardens all add variety and depth to your photos. Let your surroundings inspire you and allow space for those spontaneous moments.

6. Focus on connection, not posing. The best engagement photos capture genuine moments between you. Walk, talk, laugh, and enjoy being together. The more you relax, the more natural your photos will feel. Your photographer will guide you, but the real magic comes from how you interact with each other.

7. Plan your timing and arrival. Arrive a little early so you’re not rushed. Take a few minutes to explore, settle in, and get comfortable in front of the camera. A calm start sets the tone for the whole shoot and helps you enjoy the experience.

Final thought. An engagement shoot at Thornbury Castle is about more than photos; it’s about marking an exciting time in your life in a setting that feels truly special. With a little planning and the right mindset, you’ll walk away with images that capture not only the place but also your connection and excitement for what’s ahead.
